We discussed how CBP/ICE, and local law enforcement function as gatekeepers in our justice system. They decide whether survivors are believed, whether patterns are documented, whether parents are separated from their children, detained or deported. </p><p>We also discussed how sexual violence is too often left out of criminal justice reform conversations. Violence is usually discussed through excessive force, but sexual harassment, sexual assault, rape-case mishandling and abuses by law enforcement are also part of the same power structure. This is especially dangerous for women who are Black, poor, criminalized, involved in sex work, undocumented or otherwise treated as less credible by the system.</p><p>Another part of the conversation was New Mexico and the humanitarian search work being done there. In the desert, women and girls are disappearing not only from their lives, but from public memory. Some are migrants. Some may never be identified. Some may not even be recovered. And when a woman&#8217;s clothing, shoes, backpack, phone, ID, or bones are left exposed to sun and wind without urgency from the state, that too is part of the scaffolding.</p><p>We talked about Battalion Search and Rescue and the Not Forgotten Project &#8212; Para Las Madres, a humanitarian search and documentation effort in New Mexico. Volunteers return again and again to desert sites where remains have been found or reported, searching for bones, clothing, backpacks, IDs, phones, and anything that might help restore a name to someone who has been reduced by policy and indifference to &#8220;remains.&#8221; Jenn and I will be going to New Mexico to join Para Las Madres the first week of June. </p><p>This work is grueling and sacred, and it should not depend on volunteers scraping together gas money. If you&#8217;d like to learn more about this important work, I just published a piece about it <a href="https://eleanorsquad.substack.com/p/when-all-thats-left-of-me-is-bones">here.</a> If you&#8217;d like to donate to the Not Forgotten Project, here is their <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/not-forgotten-project-para-las-madres">GoFundMe link.</a></p><p>The throughline is this: violence against women persists because too many systems treat connected harms as separate problems. Law enforcement, courts, workplaces, insurers, mental health systems, immigration enforcement, border policy, and public agencies all touch the same crisis. When they do not act with urgency and care, they become part of the scaffold that allows the violence of women to persist. </p><p>Thank you <span class="mention-wrap" data-attrs="{&quot;name&quot;:&quot;Letters from a Feminist&quot;,&quot;id&quot;:436405643,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;user&quot;,&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://substack.com/@lettersfromafeministwithzulfina&quot;,&quot;photo_url&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/0a3bd6f1-53c4-4713-886b-5445c8a3f3e9_640x558.png&quot;,&quot;uuid&quot;:&quot;8dda96a9-e26c-4641-af5b-ef1d8293bc7e&quot;}" data-component-name="MentionToDOM"></span>, <span class="mention-wrap" data-attrs="{&quot;name&quot;:&quot;Natasha K.&quot;,&quot;id&quot;:177254780,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;user&quot;,&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://substack.com/@truthshewrote&quot;,&quot;photo_url&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/c6bb61a4-3dfb-4715-abc3-5640ddccf9bf_2344x2344.jpeg&quot;,&quot;uuid&quot;:&quot;73f8ed78-b9ad-45f5-aace-d03634f65731&quot;}" data-component-name="MentionToDOM"></span>, <span class="mention-wrap" data-attrs="{&quot;name&quot;:&quot;LeftieProf&quot;,&quot;id&quot;:116079548,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;user&quot;,&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://substack.com/@leftieprof&quot;,&quot;photo_url&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/75d89751-a682-41b9-9c0a-0f4040553296_652x650.png&quot;,&quot;uuid&quot;:&quot;6e3200f3-a346-49e9-bcfe-46211ee682b8&quot;}" data-component-name="MentionToDOM"></span>, <span class="mention-wrap" data-attrs="{&quot;name&quot;:&quot;Laura A. Join <a href="https://substack.com/profile/16870857-jenn-budd">Jenn Budd</a> and me on Wednesday, May 20, at 7 p.m. EDT for a live discussion with <a href="https://substack.com/profile/9454562-alisa-valdes-rodriguez">Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez</a>.</p><p>Jenn and Alisa understand what it means to confront systems and tell the truth anyway. Both know what it means to survive rooms that try to contain women, writers, and truth-tellers &#8212; and to keep investigating, writing, and refusing to be silenced.</p><p>The good ol&#8217; boys, and even some gals, want them to shut up and behave, but thankfully, they refuse. And America is all the better for it. Together, they bring fire, depth, and courage &#8212; and I consider myself lucky just to be in the room.</p><p>This is why we created Scaffolding: for honest, necessary, unsanitized conversations rooted in the belief that women have the power to tear down the old scaffolding and build something better.</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://thescaffoldingorg.substack.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Scaffolding is a reader-supported publication. From there, we look at the fight over mifepristone &#8212; the medication used in many early abortions &#8212; and why efforts to restrict telehealth, mail, and pharmacy access are really about controlling the pathways to care.</p><p>We also discuss the recent CBP cruise ship story, where federal authorities made serious allegations involving child sexual exploitation material while offering limited public transparency around charges, evidence, or prosecution. Together, these stories raise a larger question: when the state says it is protecting women, children, families, or the public, who is actually being protected &#8212; and who is being watched, punished, separated, or disappeared?</p><p>This conversation connects reproductive surveillance, family policing, immigration enforcement, media responsibility, and institutional betrayal &#8212; and asks what it would mean to build systems rooted not in fear and control, but in care, transparency, due process, reproductive freedom, and real safety.</p><p>Thank you <span class="mention-wrap" data-attrs="{&quot;name&quot;:&quot;Cat: Poli-Psych&quot;,&quot;id&quot;:94117599,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;user&quot;,&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://substack.com/@catherineannbower&quot;,&quot;photo_url&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/345979d9-8d12-425f-997a-eaa2548c03d9_224x224.jpeg&quot;,&quot;uuid&quot;:&quot;e746b3a6-aa79-4e22-bc7b-d66ac5596c3a&quot;}" data-component-name="MentionToDOM"></span>, <span class="mention-wrap" data-attrs="{&quot;name&quot;:&quot;Letters from a Feminist&quot;,&quot;id&quot;:436405643,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;user&quot;,&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://substack.com/@lettersfromafeministwithzulfina&quot;,&quot;photo_url&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/0a3bd6f1-53c4-4713-886b-5445c8a3f3e9_640x558.png&quot;,&quot;uuid&quot;:&quot;492eee7e-38b5-48fd-b635-e6e14db0abec&quot;}" data-component-name="MentionToDOM"></span>, <span class="mention-wrap" data-attrs="{&quot;name&quot;:&quot;Mandy Ohman&quot;,&quot;id&quot;:183065704,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;user&quot;,&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://substack.com/@mavenchendias&quot;,&quot;photo_url&quot;:&quot;https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!9UDS!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F53c7436c-0e2f-4856-8fb2-5cfc74ef7232_136x140.jpeg&quot;,&quot;uuid&quot;:&quot;a0c83f0a-abc5-4eba-aa17-34752e6a5f37&quot;}" data-component-name="MentionToDOM"></span>, <span class="mention-wrap" data-attrs="{&quot;name&quot;:&quot;Courtney&quot;,&quot;id&quot;:10067839,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;user&quot;,&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://substack.com/@onelittlerevelation&quot;,&quot;photo_url&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/afe2e1fc-753f-4a91-9881-8caf8565229a_1175x1177.png&quot;,&quot;uuid&quot;:&quot;81183863-6766-4477-8068-4a6ed4079981&quot;}" data-component-name="MentionToDOM"></span>, <span class="mention-wrap" data-attrs="{&quot;name&quot;:&quot;The Biological Imagination&quot;,&quot;id&quot;:413741546,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;user&quot;,&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://substack.com/@thebiologicalimagination&quot;,&quot;photo_url&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/e3871f7e-27cc-4cbc-80b7-4b813185894d_1024x1024.png&quot;,&quot;uuid&quot;:&quot;63734a2f-df46-4399-8c27-e2f5492ec0b1&quot;}" data-component-name="MentionToDOM"></span>, and many others for tuning into my live video with <span class="mention-wrap" data-attrs="{&quot;name&quot;:&quot;Jenn Budd&quot;,&quot;id&quot;:16870857,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;user&quot;,&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://substack.com/@jennbudd&quot;,&quot;photo_url&quot;:&quot;https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!YAyk!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F8437d9a0-db10-42ff-be6a-df98e303c6e8_824x816.png&quot;,&quot;uuid&quot;:&quot;377c05b3-eed5-4628-b881-6f17340a89b8&quot;}" data-component-name="MentionToDOM"></span>!
